This painting, “Night Bus to Jaisalmer,” transports me back 25 years to the late 1990s, evoking memories of one of my many travels through India. On this particular journey, I took a night bus to Jaisalmer—a magical voyage to a truly captivating destination. For a social anthropologist like me, the experience of a twelve-hour ride in a cramped, weathered bus became more than just travel. It was an exploration of the "imagined community" that forms among strangers sharing the challenges and intimacy of such a journey through the dark. This painting captures the spirit of that unforgettable trip, blending nostalgia and wonder.
